Cooling is not the primary function of an AC in Florida

Life in Palm Beach
Air conditioning is not a luxury but a necessity for Florida residents. Aside from the heat, Florida has a very wet climate, especially in the summer. Therefore, the primary function of an air conditioner in Florida is to dehumidify the air and then cool it. Proper air dehumidification is the main factor in maintaining a favorable microclimate in the house.

Interestingly, Willis Carrier, the air conditioner inventor, initially invented the machine to dehumidify the air, not cool it. Cooling became an additional effect. This happened in NYC in 1902. The most curious thing is that the first air conditioner was intended not to create a pleasant coolness for printing house workers but to combat humidity, significantly deteriorating the printing quality.

Indoor relative humidity should be around 50% to avoid mold growth, including the most dangerous to human health, black mold.

Here are four basic rules to avoid trouble:

1. Keep your air conditioner on when you leave for a few days. The best temperature is 72 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Do a tune-up at least once every six months to ensure your air conditioner is cooling well and dehumidifying.

3. When installing a new air conditioner, carefully calculate its capacity. If the air conditioner is too powerful, there will be high humidity because it cools the room too quickly and turns off before removing moisture from the air. An underpowered air conditioner will run without shutting off, increasing your electric bill but not allowing you to achieve the desired room temperature.
